Mod Monday

Mod Monday 1.jpgA Free Mod Monday Lesson -- The Cold Brew Space Problem:

Free Mod Monday is one of those Starbucks perks that is amazing if used properly. The promise is simple: customize your drink for free. The reality is slightly more physics-defying.

Yesterday, I ordered my usual grande cold brew. On a whim, I added salted caramel protein cold foam via Free Mod Monday. The result? A drink that looked beautiful, tasted incredible, and left me thirsty because the foam took up enough space to essentially downgrade my grande into a half-full experience.

I ended up brewing a cup at home just to get the caffeine volume I require to function.

What I Learned

Please understand, this is NOT a complaint about Starbucks or their policy. Free Mod Monday is genuinely generous. But it does reward strategy over spontaneity.

  • Size matters more than you think: If you're adding significant toppings, foams, or extra shots, consider sizing up your cup so you get your normal caffiene fix rather than dealing with a half-empty cup.
  • Foam has volume: Cold foam isn't negligible. A generous pour can easily displace 2–3 ounces of liquid in a grande, which is the difference between satisfied and stuck in zombie mode.
  • Plan ahead and upcup (yes I said "upcup" this where my half caffienatted brain spirals to): Don't add a fancy mod and then realize mid-sip that you need more coffee. Choose to upsize your cup from the start. It's a simple dropdown if you're using the app.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Free Mod Monday really cover all customizations?

Yes, Starbucks' Free Mod Monday allows you to add syrups, cold foams, extra shots, milk swaps, and other modifications at no charge (**up to $2.25 at the time of this post**). The trick is doing it smartly so your drink experience matches your expectations.

How much space does cold foam actually take up?

Depending on how generously the barista tops your drink, cold foam can occupy 2–4 ounces in a grande cup. That's enough to noticeably reduce the liquid coffee remaining.

Should I always size up on Free Mod Monday?

If you're adding substantial mods—especially foams, extra shots, or multiple syrups—yes. If you're just swapping milk types or adding a single pump of syrup, your usual size is probably fine.

Is there a charge for the larger cup size?

I just added two drinks to my app and confirmed that, at this time, no I would not have an upcharge for an #upcup with or without the mod!
